Public Advisory: The 12 Days of Fire Safety – Day 9

  • Municipal Affairs and Environment

December 19, 2018

Having the right number of smoke alarms installed in the appropriate areas of your home – and keeping them all in good working order – is critical in a fire situation. Smoke alarms can save lives, but they must be correctly installed and properly maintained.

Installing Smoke Alarms

If possible, use inter-connected smoke alarms so that if one smoke alarm inside your home is triggered, they all activate.

Use visual smoke alarms that have lights or vibrations to alert anyone in your home who is Deaf, late-deafened, or hard of hearing.

Install smoke alarms in the following areas:

  • On every level of your home, including the basement;
  • In every bedroom; and
  • In the hallway or room outside of every bedroom or separate sleeping area.

Maintaining Smoke Alarms

  • Test your smoke alarms once a month to ensure they are working properly;
  • Replace the batteries as often as indicated by the smoke alarm manufacturer. A good rule of thumb is to replace them every six months when the clocks change;
  • Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years.
