Public Advisory: Ice Jam Advisory on Exploits River

  • Municipal Affairs and Environment

January 26, 2018

The Provincial Government has issued an ice jam advisory on the Exploits River in the vicinity of the Town of Badger. Ice levels for Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be very high and the location of the town puts it at risk of flooding.

In addition, the level of water is currently high on Badger Brook given the precipitation over the past week. Residents and travellers in the area are asked to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures where possible. To learn more about how to get better prepared to cope with natural hazards, including flooding, information is available at getprepared.gc.ca .

The Town of Badger experienced significant flooding in 2003. Since then, a river monitoring system and an emergency management plan have been in place. The department remains in regular contact with the municipality and its emergency management partners and continues to actively monitor the situation.

Information regarding water levels and other river data is available online at the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment website at www.mae.gov.nl.ca/waterres/flooding/badger.html.
