The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, today announced $110,000 in funding for SPCA Newfoundland and Labrador (SPCA NL). The funding is an annual contribution to assist the activities of the province’s nine regional SPCA branches.

The SPCA is the oldest and most well-established animal welfare organization in Newfoundland and Labrador. Founded in 1954, this registered charity provides shelter and care to stray, unwanted and abused animals, with the goal of adopting out as many as possible to private individuals in permanent homes. Each SPCA across the province is run by dedicated volunteers and depends on public donations to carry out its activities.

The annual contribution from the Provincial Government is provided by the Animal Health Division of the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources. Provincial SPCA branches assist in supporting enforcement of the provincial Animal Health and Protection Act by providing care and shelter to animals (specifically dogs and cats) seized by the RCMP, RNC and municipal inspectors in the course of animal cruelty investigations.

Quotes
“The volunteers at our province’s SPCA branches work tirelessly for animal welfare and are among the most dedicated and caring people I know. Although it can be difficult, heart-breaking work, their advocacy pays off in the number of animals that get a second chance for safe, happy lives. On behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, thank you to the SPCA’s volunteers and supporters for your unwavering commitment.”
Honourable Gerry Byrne
Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources

“Our provincial SPCA network is dedicated to caring for shelter animals in need, preventing cruelty, and encouraging responsible pet ownership. Our volunteers are creating communities where animals thrive and are treated with love and respect. This funding, coupled with the generous support of the many people who donate time, money, supplies and care to SPCA branches across Newfoundland and Labrador, continues to support our mission to promote and improve the well-being of animals.”
