December 12, 2018

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is undertaking a land development project in the Town of Cormack for fruit and vegetable production. New and existing farmers in need of land to operate and develop an Agricultural Crown Land lease for commercial production are encouraged to apply.

The property is located on Pine Avenue, Cormack, and contains approximately 19.9 acres of which 15.7 acres has been rough cleared for agriculture development. The applicant is responsible for further land enhancement where required. The land was purchased by the Provincial Government under the Provincial Agriculture Land Consolidation Program and the applicant will reimburse government for costs associated with surveying the property.

Applicants interested in leasing land in Cormack are required to submit a proposal through the Call for Proposals process. New entrants to the fruit and vegetable sector will be given preference and proposals must be received by Friday, January 11, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.

The Request for Proposals Applicant Guide is available at www.faa.gov.nl.ca/agrifoods/land/obtaining_land/requests_for_proposals.html
It is recommended that a business plan be included in the application.

In January 2018, a large-scale land development pilot project was announced for Reidville. The successful proponents secured 71.66 acres on Rocky Brook Road which they are currently developing.

This initiative advances the Provincial Government’s plans to develop a stronger economic foundation and increase food self-sufficiency by at least 20 per cent by 2022, as outlined in The Way Forward. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Quote
“Based on the success of the initial project we are continuing with large-scale land development. Making available land that has seen initial preparations completed allows new entrant farmers to become profitable earlier. Putting new energy, new policy direction and new money into our agriculture sector is paying off. New farms are being established with 46 new farming operations registered in Newfoundland and Labrador this year.”

Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources
