Minister Byrne Congratulates Ocean Choice International on new Chinese Marketing Agreement

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources is congratulating Ocean Choice International (OCI) on entering into a marketing agreement with Qingdao Meichu Food Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Winning Group, for the promotion of yellowtail flounder and grey sole into the Chinese retail and online markets. The goal is also to add other seafood species as part of the agreement in the future such as red fish, snow crab, cold water shrimp and sea cucumber.

Meichu products are sold in approximately 1,600 Chinese retail stores. The company also has an e-commerce presence on T-Mall and JD.com. OCI markets its products around the world, and this partnership will further enhance the company’s retail presence.

OCI is one of 13 companies from this province in China this week as part of the Atlantic Growth Strategy mission.

One of the largest economies in the world, China is a market that holds exciting opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2017 Newfoundland and Labrador exported nearly $800 million in products to China, including and fish and seafood worth $210 million. China is also an important market for sea cucumber, cold water shrimp and crab, as well as an emerging market for Newfoundland and Labrador cod.

Through the Atlantic Growth Strategy, the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces share a common vision to undertake co-operative actions that will bring stable and long-term economic prosperity to Atlantic Canada.
