Fisheries and Land Resources
October 25, 2018
The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources.
Provincial Government Transforming Agriculture Industry
Mr. Speaker, I rise today to talk about a transformation, specifically a transformation in the agriculture industry.
No longer is this very viable industry being left fallow. We are going where past governments have feared to tread - working with new entrants, supporting farmers who by their very nature are innovative and entrepreneurial to take the agriculture industry to the next level.
Mr. Speaker, the culture of the agriculture industry is changing. Our government recognized that if the industry is to remain competitive it must become a more professionalized, competitive and sustainable sector that in turn attracts the brightest and best.
I have seen what new entrants are bringing to this field. They are bursting with innovative ideas. They see efficiencies; they embrace technology. We are fostering that.
Under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership our government is supporting 23 new entrants with a total committed funding of $1.3 million. Under the Provincial Agrifoods Assistance Program 33 new entrants have received a commitment of $559,605.
And we are just getting started!
These new entrants are developing land for agriculture, installing robotic equipment, working smarter and more efficiently.
Mr. Speaker, our farmers and producers told us point blank what the agriculture industry needs. We listened and we are getting the job done. We are delivering on our Way
Forward commitments. We are transforming the agriculture sector.
