Provincial Government Recognizes World Oceans Day

June 8, 2018

June 8 is World Oceans Day, an annual celebration of our oceans and an opportunity to raise awareness of the need to help protect and conserve this vital global resource. Around the world, people are taking action through cleanup events and awareness campaigns.

This year World Oceans Day is focusing on preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for healthy oceans. This theme is especially important in Newfoundland and Labrador, where our past has been shaped dramatically by the ocean and the future well-being of many coastal communities is influenced by their relationships with the sea.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources has been a proud supporter of World Oceans Day since 2009, and recently supported a World Oceans Day family event at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Families celebrated the world’s oceans through a variety of hands-on activities, such as making reusable bags from used T-shirts and enjoying interactive and educational exhibits and activities including touch tanks, games and displays.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources encourages all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to celebrate the world’s oceans, today and every day.

Quote
“In Newfoundland and Labrador our history and way of life are closely tied to the ocean. As we celebrate World Oceans Day I encourage everyone to reflect on the important role oceans play in our lives, and to consider what we can do to become better ocean stewards.”
Honourable Gerry Byrne
Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources
