Almost All NAPE Employees Will Receive Quarter One Severance Payouts as Requested

June 15, 2018

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board and Minister Responsible for the Human Resources Secretariat, today announced that 96 per cent of NAPE employees that requested severance payouts in the first quarter will receive their payments in that period. This will represent $35.7 million in payments to 3,422 core government employees. The remaining employees that requested first quarter payments, will receive them in the second quarter.

The elimination of severance was one of the changes the Provincial Government recently introduced to compensation and benefits for NAPE employees. These changes support government’s balanced approach to fiscal management, maintaining services and creating a more affordable public service.

When all collective agreements are complete, the Provincial Government anticipates that the elimination of severance will save government $25 million annually.

Quote
“In light of the high volume of requests by NAPE employees to receive their severance in the first quarter of 2018-19, it initially seemed unlikely that we would be able to honour the significant majority of the requests. However, due to the tremendous efforts of the Human Resource Secretariat Service Centre and payroll staff, 96 per cent of those that requested first quarter payments will receive them in that period. I commend the efforts of staff and their consummate professionalism to get this accomplished. I also thank the NAPE membership for their patience and understanding as this process continues to unfold.”
