May 3, 2018

The following statement was given today by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador:

Today is a momentous day in Newfoundland and Labrador, as Judy Foote becomes the first woman to be installed as Lieutenant Governor in the history of our province.

As Premier, it is an honour to be part of such a special moment, and a pleasure to have someone who is so experienced, and so able to inspire others in this important role.

As her friend, I am proud to see Judy honoured in a way that recognizes her tremendous contributions to this province, our country, and its people throughout her life.

Those contributions will continue in her new role, and not just with respect to her ceremonial duties. Judy has already stated publicly she will continue her longstanding efforts to advance mental health, literacy, and gender balance issues. I already admire her for her achievements to date, but I very much look forward to what she will accomplish in the years to come, and I know her tenure will be memorable.

I will stand among a broad group of Judy’s friends as we all celebrate this great milestone. This will include the Honourable Carol Anne Haley, who I have appointed Registrar General of Newfoundland and Labrador. MHA Haley will participate in today’s event by presenting Judy with the Great Seal of Newfoundland and Labrador, which plays a key role in the administration of the Lieutenant Governor’s duties. That is very fitting, as Carol Anne herself played a key role in helping Judy administer so effectively to the needs of her constituents as Judy’s special assistant, before going on to use that experience as an MHA and Parliamentary Secretary.

To know Judy is to know there are a great many people who admire her and want to be part of this day. I invite all residents across our province and country to view the proceedings online as they are broadcast live by our House of Assembly, and witness a historic moment for Newfoundland and Labrador.
