Celebrating National Family Literacy Day

  • Education and Early Childhood Development

January 26, 2018

Tomorrow marks National Family Literacy Day, an initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in literacy-related activities with family. Family Literacy Day is recognized annually on January 27. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, was at Holy Family Elementary earlier this week and will be visiting St. Andrew’s Elementary next week to participate in National Family Literacy Day activities.

The Provincial Government supports a number of early learning and literacy initiatives including:

  • Offering the K-12 literacy plan, Learning for a Lifetime;
  • Providing Mother Goose programming and Parent Resource Kits that encourage learning at home;
  • Supporting the Kinderstart program; and
  • Partnering with public libraries, family resource centres, child care centres and family child care homes.

The Premier’s Task Force on Improving Educational Outcomes final report outlines 82 recommendations, including an area of focus on literacy and reading supports for our province’s children and youth.

Quote
“A solid foundation for learning starts with strong literary skills and the path to literacy begins at home. By taking the time to read with our children or to participate in learning activities with them, we are helping to build that foundation and support their development. As a government, we understand the importance of literacy skills in terms of our province’s social and economic future. Today and every day, I encourage families throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to read and learn together and to share their knowledge.”
Honourable Dale Kirby
Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development
