The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes Hindu Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy Diwali.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, but is also celebrated by members of other religions around the world.

In Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Families decorate homes, businesses, and temples with festive lights and gather to light candles, pray, enjoy fireworks, and exchange gifts.

The 2018 Diversity Calendar acknowledges this and other cultural holidays and events, a key commitment in The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador.

This collaborative, partnership-driven immigration action plan delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
