Appointments Announced for Post-Secondary Education System

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced appointments in the province’s post-secondary education system.

  • Kryston Munnings is appointed as the Grenfell Campus Student Union representative to Memorial University’s Board of Regents, which is the corporate body of Memorial University. The management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of Memorial University are vested in the Board of Regents.
  • Peter Adams and Dr. Brenda Kelleher-Flight are appointed as general representatives to College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is CNA’s corporate body responsible for overseeing, managing and directing the college including its financial operations and academic programming.
  • Carl Barrett is appointed as the owner/operator representative to the Private Training Corporation’s Board of Directors. The Private Training Corporation was created to ensure that students attending private training institutions are protected in the event of a school closure. To achieve this, the corporation monitors the fiscal health of institutions and manages a Train Out Fund established in the Private Training Institutions Act.

Student representatives are nominated by their respective student unions. Nominations for the owner/operator representative for the Private Training Corporation’s Board of Directors are brought forward by private training institutions. All other appointments were recommended though the merit-based Independent Appointments Commission. Members of the public interested in opportunities to serve on provincial agencies, boards and commissions are encouraged to complete an application at www.iacnl.ca.

Biographies of Appointees in the Post-Secondary Education System

Kryston Munnings
Kryston Munnings is an international student from Belize. He is enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) program at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Grenfell Campus. He completed the Associate of Arts (Psychology) program at St. John’s College, Junior College, in Belize. He serves as a Grenfell Campus Student Union Councillor-at-Large and is the current elected Speaker for the International Student Caucus. He is the Co-Lead for Jack.Org Grenfell Chapter and is a member of the Rotaract Club, and Students with Disabilities Caucus at Grenfell Campus.

Captain Peter Adams
Captain Peter Adams is a Master Mariner and Managing Director of Desgagnes Atlantik. He has experience in transportation services, tourism, human resources, governance, marine services, policy, and planning. His expertise includes safety management and business development.

Dr. Brenda Kelleher-Flight
Dr. Brenda Kelleher-Flight is a consultant/coach with GDP Consulting Inc. and has experience in governance, education, health, policy and planning. Her educational background includes Master’s degrees from St. Michael’s College (Learning Specialist) and Memorial University of Newfoundland (Educational Administration) as well as a Doctorate from the University of South Australia (Board Governance).

Carl Barrett
Carl Barrett is Director of Operations at Eastern Academy and Academy Canada. His experience includes business development, project management, and budgeting. Mr. Barrett has also served as a lecturer and teaching/research assistant at the University of New Brunswick, where he earned a Masters of Arts (Economics) degree. He also has expertise is overseeing building projects, information technology, and information systems.
