The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today commemorated the life and work of Nelson Mandela.

July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day and the 100th anniversary of the South African activist’s birth. The day is commemorated throughout the world as an occasion to reflect on Mr. Mandela’s legacy and make a rejuvenated effort to create a better and more peaceful world.

Born in South Africa during the apartheid, Nelson Mandela famously devoted his life to social justice and support for human rights. He served 27 years in prison before becoming the country’s first black head of state and is today fondly remembered as the father of the nation.

The 2018 Diversity Calendar acknowledges this and other cultural holidays and events, a key commitment in The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador.

This collaborative, partnership-driven immigration action plan delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Quote
“Nelson Mandela said ‘It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build.’ On Nelson Mandela International Day, I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to reflect on the life and contributions of this iconic leader, and to contribute however they can to making our communities, province and country an even more welcoming place for all people.”
