May 30, 2018

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today congratulated graduating students of Memorial University and its Fisheries and Marine Institute.

Spring 2018 convocations began at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus on May 17, and continue in St. John’s until June 1 with the Fisheries and Marine Institute graduation being held June 15. In total, approximately 2,500 degrees will be awarded, including roughly 600 graduate degrees.

Memorial University is a world-class post-secondary institution making valuable contributions to the society, culture and economy of Newfoundland and Labrador. The university is highly-regarded among its peer institutions and its alumni are accomplished leaders in communities throughout the province, across Canada, and around the world.

Through Budget 2018, the Provincial Government is providing $366 million for Memorial University’s operating grant, which includes $55 million for the Faculty of Medicine. This is the highest public investment as a percentage of a university’s general operating revenues of any university in Canada.

Supporting the province’s public post-secondary institutions delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
