The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes Muslim Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a peaceful and fulfilling month of Ramadan, which begins this week.
Ramadan is a time of fasting, self-reflection, and charity for Muslims throughout the world. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the diverse and growing Muslim community enjoys a wide variety of Ramadan traditions, including volunteering and meals shared with family, friends, neighbours, and especially people in need.
In February 2018, the Provincial Government released the first annual Diversity Calendar, meeting a key commitment in the Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador to publicly acknowledge cultural holidays and events. This initiative delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

“Ramadan is a joyous time of year for Muslim Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, who spend this month giving back to our communities and helping those in need. It is my great pleasure to wish the Muslim community a rewarding and blessed Ramadan. Recognizing these celebrations increases awareness of diversity in the province and helps foster a sense of community and belonging.”
