April 26, 2018

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, announced today that the application process for the new Student Mentorship Program is now open. The employer-driven program will support summer career development opportunities in the agriculture, aquaculture, technology, and oil and gas sectors. The Provincial Government made these sectors a focus for development as part of The Way Forward, which included commitments to help residents explore careers in these fields.

Budget 2018 allocates $196,000 for the Student Mentorship Program, which is supported by federal funding, and was developed in response to discussions with stakeholders at industry summits held throughout the province.

In its inaugural year, the Student Mentorship Program will connect 25 youth with employers in each of the four targeted sectors for a total of 100 jobs. Participants will be partnered with a mentor who is an established professional in their field of interest. This partnership will provide valuable work experience and enable participants to develop the skills, knowledge and connections they need to begin their careers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

More information about the new Student Mentorship Program, including the application form for employers, can be found at www.aesl.gov.nl.ca. The deadline for applications is May 17, 2018.

Quote
“The new Student Mentorship Program continues the efforts of the Cabinet Committee on Jobs to work with industry partners and encourage private sector job creation and economic growth in key sectors throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
