Provincial Government Invites Input on Development of Adult Literacy Action Plan

  • Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

March 9, 2018

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced public consultations on the development of an Adult Literacy Action Plan.

Literacy and numeracy are more than reading, writing, and math and are key skills that influence everyday lives, and can have potential impacts on an individual’s health, finances, and employability. Improving adult literacy is a key component of building the workforce and driving economic growth. Input from individuals and organizations that have insight and an in-depth knowledge of the impact of adult literacy on learners, communities and the workplace is central to the successful development of a Provincial Adult Literacy Action Plan.

Information regarding the consultations, including a Discussion Guide can be found at engagenl.ca . The consultations and development of the action plan are focused on the themes of achieving better outcomes, providing responsive programming, and working together.

Addressing low literacy rates in the province is a priority for government, as identified in the Minister’s mandate letter, and aligns with the vision outlined in The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Quote
“Literacy is more than just reading and writing. Our province’s Adult Literacy Action Plan must consider employability, digital literacy, and technology. We welcome the knowledge and insight of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, including those with expertise in labour, education, and industry, in the development of a strong and effective plan.”
