Brush Clearing Enhances Safety Along Provincial Highways

The Provincial Government has continued efforts to increase highway safety with roadside brush clearing along 29 routes throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

This year, approximately $2.2 million has been spent to clear more than 500 hectares of brush. Areas identified for brush clearing were determined based on factors such as traffic volumes, visibility and moose-vehicle collision rates.

Brush clearing makes it easier for motorists to spot animals near the road and increases overall visibility for situational awareness in areas where there are turns, hills, or other features that may affect visibility. It also makes signs more visible and provides more space for snow removal.

Quote
“Clearing roadside brush along our highways is an important part of our greater efforts to make highway travel safer in Newfoundland and Labrador. While we know brush clearing is an effective way to keep highways safe, we remind everyone to slow down, pay attention and watch for moose.”
