Sale of Hoyles-Escasoni Complex Finalized

Following a public tender process, the Department of Transportation and Works has finalized the sale of the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex in St. Johns for $650,000.

In November 2015, a public tender was issued for purchase of the buildings and lands. An Environmental Site Assessment, which was made available to bidders, indicated numerous hazardous materials in the building and soil contamination.

The tender closed in January 2016. A bid by Metro Environmental Ltd. was the only bid that was received.

The sale of the facility advances one of more than 50 commitments in The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador, available online at www.thewayforward.gov.nl.ca. The vision guides Provincial Government actions to achieve greater efficiency, strengthen the provinces economic foundation, enhance services, and improve outcomes to promote a health and prosperous future.

Quotes
An independent consultants report on the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex in 2013 determined that a new facility would be more feasible than redeveloping the current buildings. In addition, the cost to government to demolish the buildings would be in excess of $4 million. With the sale finalized, the buildings are being divested at fair market value and savings of $100,000 annually, currently spent to maintain the facility, will be realized.
