Minister Gambin-Walsh Offers Condolences on the Passing of Edward Smith

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL, today offered her condolences to the family and friends of Edward Smith. Mr. Smith was a valued member of the province’s Buildings Accessibility Advisory Board.

Mr. Smith is being remembered as an accomplished educator, author and columnist. Following a lengthy career as a teacher and administrator in the fields of secondary and post-secondary education, he retired in 1995 to follow his passion for writing.

Through his writings and lived experience he became an advocate for accessibility. 

In 2001, Mr. Smith won two awards for his writing: The Gabriel Award for writing that uplifts and inspires the human spirit and the Canadian Nurses’ Award for excellence in writing and broadcasting in the field of health care.

In 2003 his autobiography “The Ashes of my Dreams” won the Newfoundland and Labrador Rogers Cable Non-Fiction Book Award.  He was also a dedicated community leader, through his involvement with the Lions Club, the Royal Canadian Legion and his church.
