Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

St. Lunaire-Griquet Iceberg Trail Development (Reg. 1932)
Proponent: St. Anthony Basin Resources Incorporated and
the Town of St. Lunaire-Griquet

The proponent has submitted a proposal to develop 46.3 kilometres of mostly coastal hiking trails from L’Anse aux Meadows to the Town of St. Lunaire-Griquet on the Northern Peninsula. The trail network will include existing trails, roads and the construction of 18.5 kilometres of new trail. Trail work on existing trails began in June 2017 and new trails will be constructed in May or June 2018. The project will be completed in 2019.

The undertaking was registered on October 11, 2017; the deadline for public comments is November 17, 2017; and the minister’s decision is due by November 25, 2017.

REVISED CONDITION OF RELEASE:

Sherwood North Pit (Reg. 1915)
Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada

The minister has revised the condition of release to the following:

IOC must extend the commitments in the Wabush 3 Benefits Plan for the construction and operations phases to include the Sherwood North Pit. This must include the reporting requirements and Gender Equity and Diversity commitments (GEDC). The extension of the benefits commitments, GEDC and reporting requirements must be outlined in a letter to, and approved by the Minister responsible for the Status of Women and the Minister of Natural Resources prior to the start of construction.
