Provincial Government Invests in Education for Health Care Providers Related to Pain and Addictions

Through an investment of $50,000, the Provincial Government has joined with other Atlantic provinces to support the work of the Atlantic Mentorship Network-Pain & Addictions (AMN-P&A), the largest network of pain and addiction providers in Canada. The network links groups of primary health care providers directly to pain and addiction experts to help their patients living with daily chronic pain and addiction.

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, made the announcement today while speaking to delegates at the Atlantic Pain Conference being held at the Delta St. John’s Hotel and Convention Centre.

Funding will be used to connect health care providers in collaborative and inter-professional education and mentorship opportunities. Such opportunities will help support community-based management of pain and addictions.

Work of the AMN-P&A aligns with the Provincial Government’s Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan. The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan outlines short, medium and long-term goals to transform the province’s mental health and addictions care system within five years.

Quotes
“Pain is both a mental and physical ailment and its devastating effects may include addiction. Gaining a better understanding of pain and its management will contribute significantly to a comprehensive response to addiction in our community.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services

“This funding will provide physicians, nurses and other health care professionals throughout Newfoundland and Labrador with support and education to provide the best possible care for the people of our province. It will connect professionals in our province with their counterparts in Atlantic Canada and across the continent to bring the most up to date knowledge and skill to their practice.”
