Provincial Government Releases Pre-Budget Consultation Framework

The Provincial Government is today releasing its multi-phased approach to pre-budget consultations, beginning in December 2017 and continuing until February 2018. The public will have multiple opportunities to share their feedback on the budget process in advance of Budget 2018.

While government remains on track with projected revenues and has made significant progress in reducing the province’s annual deficit, government spending remains unsustainable. This year’s pre-budget consultations will focus on identifying opportunities for efficiencies in government operations and service delivery.

The first phase of the consultation process begins today. In this phase, interested stakeholders and members of the public can provide input through a written submission by email to budget2018@gov.nl.ca or by mail to:

Minister of Finance
c/o Pre-Budget 2018
Department of Finance
P.O. Box 8700
Main Floor, East Block Confederation Building
St. John's, NL A1B 4J6

In phase two, the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback through an online consultation hosted at EngageNL.ca. The online consultations will run from January 8, 2018, until the beginning of February.

In phase three, government will host in-person public consultations and industry roundtable events at various locations in the province, beginning on January 15, 2018. Further details on dates and times will be released in early 2018.

Quotes
“I encourage everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador to share their perspective and to be a part of these important consultations. In Budget 2018, we must take steps to address unsustainable spending in government departments and agencies, boards and commissions. I welcome public input as we make important decisions for the future of this province.”
Honourable Tom Osborne
Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board
