Winner of the 2017 National Forest Week Poster Contest Announced
Katie Spurrell, a Grade 5 student at Riverside Elementary in Clarenville, is the provincial winner of the 2017 National Forest Week Poster Contest. She received her award this morning from Derrick Bragg, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Land Resources. As the provincial winner, Ms. Spurrell’s poster will be permanently displayed at Forestry and Wildlife Headquarters. She receives a framed copy of the poster and also wins an Apple iPad and a Smokey the Bear Fun Pack.
All Grade 5 students in Newfoundland and Labrador were invited to participate in the annual contest, which provides students an opportunity to express their thoughts about forests and forestry-related issues through art.
In recognition of Canada turning 150, the theme for the 2017 National Forest Week was Canada’s Forests: Our Stories, Our Future. Students were asked to submit a poster that demonstrates their understanding of the National Forest Week theme.
Quote
“The illustrations submitted for the contest clearly demonstrate that our young students understand and care about our provincial forests. I thank the school administrators and teachers for promoting this contest in their classrooms and the students for participating and I congratulate all winners including Ms. Spurrell.”
Honourable Gerry Byrne
Minister of Fisheries and Land Resource
