The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources:

Richard Oram to be Inducted into Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate Richard Oram, Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2017 inductee into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame. Mr. Oram, or Dick to his family and friends, has made significant contributions to the agricultural industry and is a worthy inductee.

The Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame celebrates the contributions of individuals to the agriculture industry in Atlantic Canada. Richard Oram’s distinguished career included working with this department for more than 30 years. He is well known for his work to establish a cranberry industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The family farm was started by Richard Oram more than two decades ago. It expanded to include Mark’s Market, located in central Newfoundland, in 2016. The market produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that are typically, and not so typically, grown in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mr. Speaker, Richard Oram continues to share his passion with Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. His local produce is helping expand the industry and boosting the local economy. We are proud to assist Mr. Oram in strengthening our agriculture industry.

The Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held October 19 at Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro, Nova Scotia This year’s inductees also include Keith Barrett, Prince Edward Island; Joseph Brennan, New Brunswick; and David Dickinson, Nova Scotia. We congratulate the inductees and wish them continued success in the future.

Mr. Speaker, I thank Richard Oram and his family for their dedication to the industry.

Thank you.
