Province Set to Mark National Forest Week

People throughout the province are being encouraged to take part in events marking National Forest Week 2017 being celebrated from September 24 to 30.

The theme this year is Celebrating Canada’s Forests – Our Stories, Our Future and recognizes Canada’s rich forest heritage and how this valuable renewable resource will continue to influence and shape future growth.

Several activities focused on youth participation have been planned for National Forest Week including a forestry themed poster contest open to all grade five students in the province and Explore Forestry Day planned for Wednesday, September 27 in Corner Brook.

Explore Forestry Day presents a unique opportunity for elementary school students to learn more about the management of our forest resources in an interactive fun-filled outdoor setting. The event is hosted by the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources with support from forest sector partners including the Canadian Institute of Forestry, the Association of Registered Professional Foresters of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Forest Safety Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Resource Innovations Inc., Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. and the Canadian Forest Service.

National Tree Day has also been designated for September 27 and will be marked by a tree planting ceremony during Explore Forestry Day in Corner Brook.

Additional details about the poster contest, Explore Forestry Day, tree planting ceremonies along with a full schedule of National Forest Week events is available on the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources website at www.faa.gov.nl.ca/forestry/nfw/.

Quote
“Our province’s forest resources continue to be a source of economic, social and recreational value for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. During National Forest Week I encourage everyone to reflect on the benefits derived from our forests and acknowledge the efforts of our professional foresters who protect and sustainably manage the resource for the future.”
