Provincial Government Announces Funding to Support Innovation, Transition to Groundfish in Seafood Industry
The Provincial Government is continuing to support the diversification and growth of Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood industry with investments of approximately $1.8 million to date in 2017-18 as part of the $2 million Seafood Innovation and Transition Program.
Derrick Bragg, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Land Resources, today joined members of the Fogo Island Co-op for the announcement.
The Seafood Innovation and Transition Program funds projects that focus on technologies and innovations in harvesting, processing, aquaculture and marketing to strategically place Newfoundland and Labrador in a position to avail of opportunities in the international marketplace. A key emphasis for the program is the fishing industry’s transition from a predominantly shellfish fishery to a groundfish fishery.
Last year, the program supported 37 projects throughout the province’s seafood industry. So far for 2017-18, applications from 62 projects have been approved for funding. A complete list of projects funded to date in 2017 can be found in the backgrounder below.
This initiative supports commitments made in The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador. The seafood sector is also a key priority for the Cabinet Committee on Jobs, which is focused on increasing jobs and growth through unprecedented partnerships with industry.
Quotes
“Last year, the production value of our seafood sector reached yet another record high, exceeding $1.4 billion. We have committed to expanding the industry in a sustainable manner. By supporting innovation and modernization, we are on track to even greater successes in the future as we transition to a more diversified and groundfish-based industry.”
Honourable Gerry Byrne
Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources
"I am proud that our government continues to support local industry in communities throughout our province. The funding announced today bolsters the economy in communities of this area, and I know the same program is having a positive effect on enterprises all along our shores."
Derrick Bragg
Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Land Resources
“The fishery is and always will be the mainstay on Fogo Island. We are delighted that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has approved our request for funding under the Seafood Innovation and Transition Program. Having a government that shares the same vision as us in this renewed fishery is important and we value our relationship with them tremendously.”
