Executive Council
November 23, 2017

The following statement was given today by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador:

Statement by the Premier on Residential Schools

“On Friday, November 24, I will attend Prime Minister Trudeau’s apology ceremony involving former students of the Newfoundland and Labrador residential school system in Happy Valley–Goose Bay.

This apology is an important step, and one of many our respective governments are taking to advance reconciliation with Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador.

I wish to advise that the Provincial Government will undertake its own apology to residential school survivors, in consultation with the survivors of the former residential school system and the leaders of Indigenous Governments and Organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador. Further details will be provided as they can be made available.”
