Provincial Government Provides Update on Merit-Based Appointments

Since implementing a merit-based appointments process through passage of the Independent Appointments Commission Act in May 2016, the Provincial Government has appointed over 200 individuals to agencies, boards and commissions. Newfoundland and Labrador currently has the most open and accessible appointments process in the country.

Since July 2016, significant progress has been made in merit-based appointments through this new process with:

  • Over 1,300 individuals having applied for appointments through the online application portal;
  • 226 people having been appointed to serve on 43 separate boards and tribunals; and
  • Seven people having been appointed to key leadership roles within agencies, boards and commissions.

The Independent Appointments Commission Act was government’s inaugural piece of legislation and led to the creation of the Independent Appointments Commission; an independent, non-partisan body that shares responsibility with the Public Service Commission to apply a merit-based process to recommend qualified individuals for appointments to key board and leadership roles in approximately 30 agencies, boards and commissions. In addition to providing support and advice, the Public Service Commission also issues merit-based recommendations for a further 130 entities.

Individuals interested in viewing opportunities and applying through the public appointment process are encouraged to visit www.exec-abc.gov.nl.ca/.

Quote
“Our first commitment as a government was to introduce a merit-based process for appointments to agencies, boards and commissions. The Independent Appointments Commission and the Public Service Commission have had significant successes over the past year in the implementation of this mandate. I thank both for their efforts and I express the Provincial Government’s appreciation to those individuals who have offered themselves for public service.”
Honourable Tom Osborne
Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board
Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission
