Premier Ball Congratulates Paradigm Hyperloop

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today congratulated Paradigm Hyperloop, for their second place finish at the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Speed Competition in Hawthorne, California.

The Paradigm Hyperloop team is an alliance of students from Memorial University, College of the North Atlantic, and Northeastern University out of Boston, Massachusetts, that formed to develop a highly innovative design for what is considered the fifth mode of transportation – the Hyperloop.

The SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition was an open challenge to student teams across the globe to design and build Hyperloop test vehicles. Paradigm Hyperloop was one of the final 23 teams out of an initial 1,200 that competed in California at the SpaceX Hyperloop Competition. Using the air bearing design described in Elon Musk’s original Hyperloop paper, Paradigm Hyperloop achieved a speed of 101 kilometres per hour.

Members of Paradigm Hyperloop attending post-secondary school in Newfoundland and Labrador include Adam Keating, Mark Comeau, Nick Warren, Jeremy Andrews, Michael Duguay, Rowan Meaney, Liam Maher, Liam Cadigan, Darryl Day, Matt Lane, Kyle Genge, Stephanie Adey, Nicola Duffy, Matt Hickey, Steven Kennedy, Jack Chapman, Catherine Flynn, Allison Button, Roy Brushett, Max Belbin, and Abdul Iqbal.

As outlined in The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government is committed to re-setting the provincial innovation agenda by developing a long-term strategy to expand the pool and capacity of Newfoundland and Labrador’s economic wealth generators, innovation and growth-focused businesses.
