Premier to Attend Come From Away

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will attend a performance of Come From Away at Broadway’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City tomorrow (Saturday, June 10).

Come From Away, which has become a smash hit in the New York theatre scene, is a remarkable true story of how 7,000 stranded passengers were welcomed by the Town of Gander during one of the darkest days in recent history – September 11, 2001.

In May, Come From Away was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including:

  • Best Musical;
  • Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley);
  • Best Choreography (Kelly Devine);
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Jenn Colella);
  • Best Book of a Musical (Irene Sankoff and David Hein);
  • Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre (Irene Sankoff and David Hein); and
  • Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Howard Binkley)

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud of the producers, directors, cast and crew of Come From Away for all they have accomplished to date and wish them continued success at the upcoming Tony Awards which will air live on Sunday, June 11, at 9:30 p.m. NST on the CBS television network.

“Newfoundland and Labrador is a rare find. People from all over the globe travel to our beautiful province to experience everything that makes us truly unique. These characteristics were highlighted following the events of 9/11 and this story is now being told on Broadway. We are incredibly proud of this story which is helping to create greater awareness of what makes our province so special. I am very much looking forward to attending the Come From Away Broadway performance this weekend, and join my fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as we wait with anticipation to learn the winners of this weekend’s Tony Awards. I wish the best of luck to all those involved in this marvelous production!”
