Minister Kirby Announces Key Milestone for Affordable Child Care

As of June 1, 2017, families throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from an increased income threshold under the provincial Child Care Subsidy Program. The threshold is being adjusted for the first time since 2007, increasing from $27,500 to $32,000. This will mean that a greater number of families will be eligible for a full Child Care Subsidy, other families will see a reduction in their parental contribution and some families that were previously ineligible will now receive a partial subsidy.

As a result, more families with low to middle incomes will have access to crucial supports for reducing child care costs when they choose a licensed child care centre or family child care home.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, made the announcement today during a tour of New Fun Land child care centre in Torbay.

Budget 2017 committed an addition $2 million annually to support this initiative.

Quote
“We are pleased to again deliver on our mandate for increasing access to affordable, quality child care for families in Newfoundland and Labrador. The income threshold for this program has not been adjusted in the past decade and has not kept pace with inflation or other government programs. To us, this was a clear opportunity to make a very real difference in the lives of many families and I encourage eligible residents to reach out and apply for support.”
Honourable Dale Kirby
Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development
