Provincial Government Helping to Sustain Environmental Efficiency

The Provincial Government, through InnovateNL, is investing approximately $234,000 to support a research and development project for Jumping Bean Coffee to create a more sustainable business while increasing its profile as an environmentally friendly coffee brand. Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, toured the production facility today.

The purpose of the project is to develop improvements to Jumping Bean Coffee’s roasting process to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. It includes collaboration between Jumping Bean Coffee, College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Industrial Engagement Unit and the roaster supplier. The technical leads for the project are two recent graduates from the Chemical Process Engineering Technology program at CNA, providing valuable work experience to the students on a commercial research and development project.

Jumping Bean Coffee currently has a roasting process called Eco2Roast, which has 85 per cent less emissions than conventional commercial coffee bean processes. Through this project, the company intends to make a series of incremental modifications to the process to recirculate the heated air back into the system for a more efficient roast. The overall goal is to reduce emissions to 95 per cent, compared to traditional coffee roasters. The company is looking to secure younger coffee drinkers who are environmentally conscious.

Jumping Bean Coffee imports green beans and roasts coffee at its facility, supplying independent and national retailers with whole beans, ground coffee, single serve pods and running a system of corporate and franchise cafes. The company is based in Mount Pearl, and has 27 full-time corporate employees.
