Government Investments Strengthen Glovertowns Tourism Infrastructure
Building on the strength of Glovertowns existing business and tourism base, the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada are making investments to enhance the towns business core and expand its marina. These investments help create opportunities for small businesses, for employment and for stronger economic certainty for the region.
The funding announcement was made today by Colin Holloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and MHA for Terra Nova, and the Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and MP for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
The Town of Glovertown will receive $128,750 from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and $351,552 from ACOA to implement Phase II of the Glovertown Town Centre Plan, an important part of their tourism growth strategy. Through this initiative, the town will improve two existing properties, including surrounding landscape, and add improved lighting and directional signage throughout the community.
The Glovertown Yacht Club will receive $247,048 from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and $159,325 from ACOA to undertake Phase IV of the marina development. The project includes constructing 10 new docks, developing a maintenance shed and marina centre, improving security at the facility with new equipment and fencing, and undertaking marketing and promotional activities.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to building a stronger economic foundation as part of The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador. As we continue to advance this commitment, todays funding announcement for initiatives in the Town of Glovertown will help provide economic benefits towards the tourism industry and assist in the long-term sustainability of the marina.
Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation
This funding will provide upgrades to Glovertown's Yacht Club and Town Centre, including the construction of 10 new docks. These investments will ensure greater capacity for economic development, as well as engagement in marketing and promotional activities. Through collaboration with our federal colleagues, these investments will attract people to the region, further establish a community core, and strengthen the local economy.
MHA for Terra Nova
The Government of Canada is pleased to invest in the people and projects that serve to strengthen community infrastructure and economic development capacity in Newfoundland and Labrador. Tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry in Atlantic Canada and a crucial sector for creating jobs and re-invigorating the regions growth, and our government understands the value and importance of partnerships and collaboration to help propel growth and build capacity in sectors like tourism.
Honourable Navdeep Bains
Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA
The Town of Glovertown is uniquely located on the edge of spectacular Terra Nova National Park with a beautiful natural environment and a marina that represents the heart of the community. The Government of Canada is delighted to support these projects and is committed to working with provincial and municipal governments and community groups to provide sustainable recreational infrastructure to help strengthen communities and to grow the tourism industry by enhancing visitor experiences and driving economic opportunities.
Honourable Judy Foote
Minister of Public Services and Procurement and MP for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity
Council is looking forward to the completion of the Town Centre. The work that has already been done has seen an increase in town pride, as well as an improved visitor experience. This will encourage more visitors, help to increase their length of stay and improve their experience while they are here.
Mayor, Town of Glovertown
The Glovertown Yacht Club was incorporated in 2005. Since then phases I, II and III of the marina development have been completed and it has been a total success. Phase IV funding will be used to complete a service building, club house and a visitor information center which will make the marina an integral part of the town centre.
