The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today congratulated Christopher Ashley of the Broadway musical Come From Away on receiving a Tony award for Best Director of a Musical, at the awards show in New York on Sunday evening.

Mr. Ashley accepted his award on behalf of the people from Newfoundland and Labrador and all first responders and their families in New York. He also acknowledged Come From Away co-creaters Irene Sankoff and David Hein.

The musical recently won a Drama Desk Award for best musical and has received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. The New York Post said it was Broadways biggest and best surprise of the season.

"On behalf of Premier Ball and the Provincial Government, I would like to congratulate everyone who played a role in the development and production of Come From Away, and the cast and crew who bring the story in a way that resonates with the audience and provides hope in times of despair. The musical has shone a spotlight on our province and its special people.
