Minister Congratulates Come From Away on Tony Award

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today congratulated Christopher Ashley of the Broadway musical Come From Away on receiving a Tony award for Best Director of a Musical, at the awards show in New York on Sunday evening.

Mr. Ashley accepted his award on behalf of the people from Newfoundland and Labrador and all first responders and their families in New York. He also acknowledged Come From Away co-creaters Irene Sankoff and David Hein.

Come From Away tells the true story of the compassion shown to 7,000 stranded passengers by the people of Gander and surrounding area during an uncertain and daunting moment in their lives on September 11, 2001. The musical recently won a Drama Desk Award for best musical and has received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. The New York Post said it was �Broadway�s biggest and best surprise of the season.�
