Minister Hawkins Highlights Success of Recent International Immigrant Recruitment

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today highlighted the success of the province’s participation in recent international immigrant recruitment events in Europe.

Officials with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour and community partners promoted immigration to Newfoundland and Labrador at fairs in France, Belgium and Ireland. Officials and the Federation Francophone de Terre-Neuve et Labrador, as well as the Reseau de Development Economique et Employabilite- Terre Neuve et Labrador engaged individuals interested in coming to Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Provincial Government has been actively engaged with partners to implement priority initiatives in the province’s The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador.

To date, the focus has been on priority areas including:

  • Public awareness and education for employers, including in-person and online information sessions;
  • Helping employers with planning and maximizing the annual immigration allocation;
  • Working with partners to provide settlement supports to newcomers.

According to the latest data, Newfoundland and Labrador welcomed its largest number of new permanent residents in 2016 at 1,190. In The Way Forward, the Provincial Government committed to increasing the annual number of immigrants welcomed to Newfoundland and Labrador to 1,700 by 2022.

Employers interested in immigration recruitment are encouraged to contact the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism at immigration@gov.nl.ca or by calling 709-729-6607.

Quote
"Officials with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour spoke individually with over 1,000 prospective immigrants and provided information about the province to over 5,000 people who attended the recruitment events. This helps spread the word about our beautiful home, a safe and welcoming place to live, work and raise a family.”
