Provincial Government Appoints Chair of College of the North Atlantic Board of Governors

The Provincial Government today announced the appointment of Alastair O’Rielly as Chair of the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) Board of Governors. The appointment is for a three-year term and was made through the merit-based appointment process established by the Independent Appointments Commission Act.

Biographical information for Mr. O’Reilly is provided in the backgrounder below.

Mr. O’Reilly replaces the outgoing Chair, Cheryl Stagg, who was appointed in 2012 and invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador in December 2016, in recognition of her many contributions to the province, including CNA.

The Board of Governors is CNA’s corporate body responsible for overseeing, managing and directing the college including its financial operations and academic programming.

BACKGROUNDER

Biographical Information for Alastair O’Rielly

Alastair O’Rielly was appointed as Deputy Minister, Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development on May 1, 2013, and retired from the public service on March 31, 2016. He served in other executive positions with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, including Deputy Minister (2006-2013) and Assistant Deputy Minister (1996) with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. He currently serves as Executive Director of the Northern Coalition, an alliance of community-based Northern Shrimp licence and quota holders, from the Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut and Labrador regions of northern Canada. Mr. O’Rielly held a number of senior positions within the private sector, including Argosy Seafoods Limited and Clearwater Fine Foods, Inc. He also worked as an independent fisheries development consultant prior to joining the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI) as Managing Director; he currently serves as Chair of the centre’s Board of Directors. He was President of the Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (FANL) from 1997 to 2003. Mr. O’Rielly holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He has served on a number of committees/boards including: MUN Faculty of Business Advisory Board, Marine Institute Industry Advisory Board, Genesis Board of Directors, and the Harris Centre Board of Directors.
