The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour:

Minister Byrne Recognizes Enhancements to Job Creation Partnerships Program

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize enhancements to the valuable Job Creation Partnerships Program.

This program supports projects that provide Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who are eligible to receive Employment Insurance with opportunities to gain work experience and improve their employment prospects. It is supported by $7 million through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement.

This year we have enhanced the application process to be more responsive to emerging needs throughout the province, including rural and remote areas. Applications may be submitted for processing at any time until September 15, 2017. Previously, applications were subject to winter, summer and fall deadlines, after which they were processed.

In order to help create jobs, the Provincial Government must engage in partnerships with employers, community organizations, and workers. A unique aspect of this program is that approved projects must benefit not only the participant but also their community.

The Job Creation Partnerships Program is an effective example of collaboration that can be targeted to each region’s unique needs.

Thank you.
