Provincial Government Now Accepting Applications for Summer Student Employment Programs

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced the Provincial Government is now accepting applications for Summer Student Employment Programs (SSEP).

Budget 2017 provides $1.865 million for two SSEPs, one for high school students and another for post-secondary students.

Applications for post-secondary students will be accepted until May 7, 2017. Private sector and not-for-profit organizations may avail of the wage subsidy for post-secondary students.

Applications for high school students will be accepted until May 22, 2017, and not-for-profit organizations throughout the province are eligible for a wage subsidy.

The Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour will also be re-engaging with the Community Sector Council NL to develop a pilot project to deliver a new summer student program with community-based organizations throughout the province. More information about this initiative will be available through the Community Sector Council NL in the coming weeks.

Wage Subsidy Details for the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour’s Summer Student Employment Programs

High School Students Post-Secondary Students
The wage subsidy for not-for-profit organizations is $10.75 per hour, plus 15 per cent of mandatory, employment-related costs.

A minimum of 20 hours up to a maximum of 40 hours per week can be subsidized for four to eight weeks.
The wage subsidy for private sector employers is $5 per hour. For not-for-profit organizations, the subsidy is $10.75 per hour, plus 15 per cent of mandatory, employment-related costs.

A minimum of 25 hours up to a maximum of 40 hours per week can be subsidized for five to 12 weeks.
