Minister Byrne Convenes Council on Higher Education

The Provincial Government signaled its commitment to increasing collaboration between Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic this week. The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador includes a commitment to forming a council to facilitate collaboration and make recommendations for both public post-secondary institutions and the Provincial Government.

The first meeting of the Council on Higher Education took place on March 23. The agenda included an overview of the Provincial Government’s commitments in The Way Forward and members discussed opportunities for collaboration.

Members of the council are the Chair of Memorial University’s Board of Regents, the President of Memorial University, the Chair of College of the North Atlantic’s Board of Governors, the President of College of the North Atlantic, and the Minister and Deputy Minister of the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour.

Members also include student representatives from the province’s public post-secondary institutions. Earlier this year, Minister Byrne appointed Alex Noel to represent Memorial University and Chris Sheaves to represent College of the North Atlantic. Both appointments are for a two-year term.
