Furthering Innovation at Post-Secondary Institutions

Provincial Government Issues Public Tender for Enhancements at College of the North Atlantic Corner Brook Campus

The Provincial Government has issued a public tender associated with the Power Engineering Shop Enhancement project at the Corner Brook Campus of College of the North Atlantic. The tender is for the supply of Major Boiler System equipment for instructional purposes, as part of the college's Centre for Energy and Thermal Systems.

"The Power Engineering Shop Enhancement project totals over $1.44 million and will expand the range of laboratory/shop equipment that will help further education and research programming objectives for power engineering at the Corner Brook Campus. This tender is important to establishing a Centre of Excellence in Energy and Thermal Systems and is funded on a cost-shared basis between the provincial and federal governments as part of the Strategic Investment Fund. Further tenders and project milestones will be announced as the project proceeds with a goal of having additional training opportunities available in Corner Brook through the college as early as fall 2017. "
- The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

College of the North Atlantic is the only provider of power engineering education and training in the province and will add third class power engineering to its suite of programs at the Corner Brook Campus. The Power Engineering Shop Enhancement project will enhance the college's ability to offer this new level of training and provide innovative research and educational opportunities.

The Power Engineering Shop Enhancement project is part of more than $4.3 million announced in November 2016 for the college's Centre for Energy and Thermal Systems and campus upgrades. This was an investment of over $2.1 million from the Federal Government with the remaining funds matched by the Provincial Government. This funding is part of the Federal Government's $2 billion Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund for improving research and innovation infrastructure at universities and colleges across Canada, including College of the North Atlantic and Memorial University.

"Our government is taking steps to ensure College of the North Atlantic is a hub for innovation in our province and the Power Engineering Shop Enhancement project will help us deliver on that mandate."
- Minister Byrne
