Preparing for the 2017 Canada Summer Games

Applications for Volunteer Mission Staff Available Online

Applications are now being accepted for individuals who wish to volunteer for the Team Newfoundland and Labrador mission staff at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, to be held July 28 to August 13, 2017, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The team will be led by Chef de Mission Rod Snow of Paradise, while Karen Sheriffs of St. John's and Frank Humber of Corner Brook will serve as Assistant Chefs. All three served in those same respective roles at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, British Columbia.

"The Canada Games are this country's top multi-sporting event, and our mission staff volunteers always play a vital role in the success of our athletes and teams. I encourage anyone who has a good knowledge of the province's amateur sport system, and thrives on working in a fast-paced environment, to make application."
- The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Seniors Wellness and Social Development

As part of Team Newfoundland and Labrador, members of the mission staff work to support all aspects of Team Newfoundland and Labrador's preparation, including in areas such as athlete services, team uniform distribution, media relations, registration, transportation and supporting assigned sports at the games. Selected mission staff members will be expected to attend the games for one week.

The Team Newfoundland and Labrador leadership team has a lot of experience. Besides serving as Chef de Mission in 2015, Mr. Snow was Assistant Chef in 2013 and 2011. Ms. Sheriffs was Assistant Chef in 2015 and 2013, and was a mission staff member in 2011, 2007 and 1999. Mr. Humber was Assistant Chef de Mission in 2015 and was a mission staff member in 2007, 2001 and 1999.

"Summer 2017 might seem like the distant future right now, but the Canada Games cycle is truly one of continuous planning and preparation. The individuals selected as part of the volunteer mission staff will find it challenging and demanding - but it will also be amongst the most rewarding and enjoyable sporting experiences they will ever have."
- Rod Snow, Chef de Mission, 2017 Canada Summer Games

The Canada Games began in 1967 and Newfoundland and Labrador has been represented in every event since. The province hosted the 1977 Canada Summer Games in St. John's and the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, and is scheduled to host the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
