Occupational Health and Safety Act Charges Laid Against Construction Company

A company has been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations arising from an incident that occurred in Trepassey on June 16, 2015. The incident involved an employee who suffered fatal injuries when he fell through a skylight located on a roof undergoing maintenance. The investigation was conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of Service NL.

The employer, Southern Construction (1981) Ltd. based in Trepassey has been charged with four counts that allege generally that it failed to:

  • Provide a safe workplace
  • Ensure workers and supervisors were made familiar with the hazards
  • Ensure fall protection was used; and
  • Ensure that work areas were arranged to allow the safe movement of workers.

The first appearance is scheduled for November 25, 2016, at Provincial Court in St. John's.
