Honouring Our Peacekeepers

Provincial Government Designates Highway of Heroes

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that the portion of the Trans-Canada Highway between Peacekeepers Way and the Veterans Memorial Highway on the Avalon Peninsula will officially be named the Highway of Heroes. The naming is in partnership with the 2nd Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Units, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter.

"The naming of the Highway of Heroes, to honour those who have fought and died for our country's freedom, carries with it a spirit of appreciation and remembrance. As our Honour 100 Commemoration underscores, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians owe a debt to men and women who have served, and continue to serve, this province. May we never forget their sacrifices and may we be reminded of their bravery every time we drive past this sign."
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, joined the Premier in the unveiling of the signage at the Canadian Forces Station in St. John's.

"The designation of this portion of highway as the Highway of Heroes is one way to honour the commitment and legacy of our soldiers, past and present. This sign serves to remember their service and dedication, ensuring their efforts are never forgotten."
- The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works

In partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion, several roads throughout the province have been named in honour of Newfoundland and Labrador's veterans including Veterans Memorial Highway, Peacekeepers Way and the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Labrador.

"The designation of the Newfoundland and Labrador portion of the Trans-Canada Highway as our Highway of Heroes is an enduring tribute to the many that have served, honouring their legacy, their sacrifice, and recognizing the pride and profound thanks of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador."
- Thomas Skelding, President, 2nd Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Units, Newfoundland and Labrador

This year, the Provincial Government marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel. Honour 100 initiatives took place throughout the province representing the Provincial Government's commitment to commemorating Newfoundland and Labrador's First World War story and continued partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion.
