Investing in Our Educators
Teachers Tour Offers Unique Opportunity to Learn About Forest Industry
The Forestry and Agrifoods Agency and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. will sponsor two educators interested in attending the Canadian Woodlands Forum 2016 Atlantic Teachers Tour, Forests Worth Knowing. Teachers and guidance counsellors are encouraged to apply to attend the forest and environmental workshop being held in Miramichi, New Brunswick, in August.
The Teachers Tour is a great opportunity for teachers and guidance counsellors to learn more about the forest industry, forest management and sustainability. It is our pleasure to once again sponsor this event which is hosted annually by the Canadian Woodlands Forum. I encourage interested educators to apply and embrace this unique opportunity.
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency
The Atlantic Teachers Tour provides an opportunity to see first-hand how modern, science based forest management is used to manage our forest resources. Participants will get the chance to tour woodlands, operations and mills, and then bring what they learn back to their respective schools as part of their curriculum or to inform students who are making career choices.
The Canadian Woodlands Forum, which takes place August 8-12, is accepting applications until June 17. There is no cost to participants.
The Newfoundland and Labrador forest industry is of tremendous economic, social and cultural importance. In Budget 2016, the Provincial Government allocated more than $28 million for silviculture projects, construction of resource roads for timber harvesting, forest insect and disease control, research and development, forest fire control measures and regional operations.
Government is also focused on diversifying the industry through the Provincial Sustainable Forest Management Strategy, Growing our Renewable and Sustainable Forest Economy.
