Helping Residents to Grow Communities

$9.3 Million Strengthens Work Experience through Job Creation

The first round of Job Creation Partnerships has been announced for 2016-17 by the Provincial Government with $9.3 million in funding approved for 219 projects to employ over 1,000 individuals. The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, provided details of approvals at an event in Corner Brook this morning.

Helping individuals gain the work experience they need to fulfil long-term career goals is an integral part in the mandate of my department. Job Creation Partnerships projects allow people to work on a variety of different projects and acquire new skills.
- The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills

Minister Byrne was at the Railway Society of Newfoundland in Corner Brook this morning to see how Job Creation Partnerships funding supports the societys efforts to preserve the legacy of the provincial railway. The society is receiving $23,564 to employ two individuals to do restoration work on Steam Engine #593, rail cars, building repairs and repainting.

This funding will help with the restoration of a piece of Newfoundland and Labradors history. The provincial railway served as a lifeline for residents and helped connect us as a province and a people. It is important we restore and maintain this piece of heritage, both for younger people to learn about our past and for those who wish to relive and celebrate treasured memories.
- John Parsons, Vice-President, Railway Society of Newfoundland

Job Creation Partnerships is funded through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement. Funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors.
