The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills:

Announcing Call for Nominations for Council of the Federation Literacy Award

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this House to announce that nominations for the Council of the Federation Literacy Award are now open. This award recognizes outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy by individuals and stakeholder groups.

Since 2005, the Council of the Federation Literacy Award has been awarded in provinces and territories across Canada. Created by Canada’s premiers, the award recognizes the valuable contributions of Canadians in the field of literacy.

Any person or group can nominate an individual for this award. Nominees must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, be 18 years of age or older, and have participated in an adult literacy, workplace literacy or Adult Basic Education program for at least six months. The deadline to nominate an individual is May 30.

Mr. Speaker, the Provincial Government remains committed to adult literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador, and that is why we will develop an Adult Literacy Strategy to guide our investments in literacy.

Thank you.
