Roads Improvements to Support Residents and Economy

Construction Underway on New Bridge to Salmonid Interpretation Centre in Grand-Falls Windsor

The Provincial Government recently awarded a contract for the construction of a new bridge over Stoney Brook in Grand Falls-Windsor leading to the Exploits River Salmonid Interpretation Centre. Construction is currently underway and the tender was awarded to Horseshoe Hill Construction Inc. of St. John's at a cost of approximately $1.1 million.

"The Provincial Government is pleased to support the construction of a new single lane panel bridge to access a very important tourist attraction on the Exploits River in Grand Falls-Windsor. The Salmonid Interpretation Centre has been a part of the community for many years and provides visitors with an in-depth look into the history, biology, ecology and habitat of the Atlantic salmon on the Exploits River. With this new bridge being constructed, this valuable attraction will remain accessible to residents and tourists for years to come."
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

This project includes the construction of a 24.4 metre, single lane panel bridge with a sidewalk spanning Stoney Brook on the road to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre. The bridge is being built immediately upstream from the existing structure and will include some minor road realignment. Traffic on the road will not be impacted significantly during the construction and the work is expected to be completed by the end of the 2015 construction season.

"The Exploits River and its famed Atlantic salmon have become integral parts of the world-class attractions offered to locals and tourists in Grand Falls-Windsor and the surrounding area. This new bridge will enhance the experience for anyone who visits the Salmonid Interpretation Centre, on foot or by vehicle. In the longer term, the improvement will also strengthen the ever-growing tourism sector in the region."
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans

Over the past three years, more than $400 million has been spent in maintaining, upgrading and enhancing hundreds of kilometres of roads, as well as replacing 23 bridges and repairing 40 other bridges throughout the province. High quality transportation infrastructure is integral to the social and economic growth of Newfoundland and Labrador, which are key elements of the recently launched Population Growth Strategy.
