Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Presents 23 Scholarships

It was a celebration of excellence today, as Sport Newfoundland and Labrador announced the recipients of its scholarships/bursaries program during its 24th Annual Scholarship Reception, held at Johnson Geo Centre in St. John's. The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, attended the ceremony on behalf of the Provincial Government.

Jillian Forsey of Kippens was named the recipient of the Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1,500, while 22 other individuals received scholarships/bursaries in the amount of $750 for their contribution to sport during 2014.

"The athletes and coach who we have honoured today are true examples of distinction in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Rod Nicholl, President for Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. "Their dedication to sport and academics shows real determination and focus. We have been doing this for 24 years now, and it continues to amaze and inspire us all."

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship/Bursary Program is designed to provide financial assistance to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches and officials, who are enrolled in a post-secondary institution. The amounts awarded help offset the costs associated with training and competition.

"We would really like to thank the Provincial Government, through the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, for its financial support of the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador's Scholarship Trust Fund," said Troy Croft, Executive Director of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. "This scholarship program is very important to us and our athletes, coaches and officials. Support from the Provincial Government is key."
