Investing in Wellness for Residents

Community Groups Receive Over $540,000 for Wellness Programs

More than 80 non-profit organizations and community groups have received a total over of $540,000 as part of the Provincial Government's 2014-15 Health and Wellness Grants Program. The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, was at the Boys and Girls Club at Buckmaster's Circle in St. John's today, to make the announcement.

"Our government has taken a comprehensive approach to promoting and supporting overall wellness within our communities. We have developed and supported initiatives though a provincial wellness plan, a recreation and sport strategy, a healthy aging policy framework, public education campaigns, and more. We are also putting the infrastructure and programs in place, in our communities, to enable people to live healthy, more active lifestyles."
- Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Health and Wellness Grants Program provides up to $10,000 to either fully fund a project or as a contribution towards the total cost of the project. Projects must support healthy living and wellness in such areas as healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco control, and injury prevention.

This year the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. John's received $10,000 to help run its Healthy Living Program for Children and Youth.

"On behalf of the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. John's, I would like to thank the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for providing us with a health and wellness grant this year. It helps support our programs, which are designed to offer our community's children and youth with safe and supportive environments where they can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, and build positive relationships and confidence that will help them throughout their lives."
- Jason Fleming, Club Manager, Boys and Girls Clubs St. John's

A complete list of this year's recipients is included in the backgrounder below.
